How to read faster and remember more

Wow! What an evening it was last week in the Great Hall where I shared the fundamentals of how to read faster and remember more with Accountants from New Zealand, Australia and South Africa.

I’d like to think the great response to my session was because of my charming wit and repartee but none of that came up in the after session conversations – it was all about how amazed everyone was that they could indeed read faster and remember more after just an hour.

“But what about when I was funny and you guys laughed....?” I pleaded, hoping for some back slapping acceptance from my new found accountant friends.

Well they were having none of that self indulgence (and rightly so) and just wanted to know more about how to improve their reading and memory skills.

“OK” I said.  “In a nutshell, here are the bare bones of how to improve your reading:”

  • First understand that improving your reading skills is about discarding the limiting habits imposed on your by the way you (and just about everyone around you) were taught to read
  • Quick tips for improved speed (and by improvements, we are talking a doubling or even trebling of your reading speed with even these simple techniques:
    1. Use a pointer (pen/pencil/finger) to guide your eyes across and down a page of text (stops the eye doing inefficient and time wasting back skipping)
    2. Read in chunks of 3,4 or even 5 words at a time instead of a single word at a time.  This is probably the fastest way to improve your reading speed without any loss of comprehension

“But what about improving my memory of what I read?” was the next question I was asked.

“Well, that is easy” I said.  Learn how to use Mind Mapping.

In a future post I shall be telling you a little bit more about this amazing thinking tool but you can get a free Mind Mapping guide from my website.

But for now, start using your finger when you read and group those words together and see how your reading speed improves.
