Institute data shows that nearly 16,000 chartered accountants do something for charity outside of their main role, the majority as school governors or charity trustees. Yet state schools today, many in inner cities, face a 40,000 shortfall in governors, hindering budget and management decision-making. What do we want to see from the political parties in their forthcoming manifestos?

During a recent trip to the North West of England, I took the opportunity to canvas members’ views on the above topic.

I freely accept that I was expecting answers around removing the regulatory burdens on business, a more competitive taxation system, perhaps even certainty in the business environment to aid planning.  It was none of these.

A mark of respect

Monday night was a big night for the marketing profession with the 50th Anniversary of the Marketing Society Awards for Excellence 2009. It was also a big night for the ICAEW as of one of the finalists for the Brand Revitalisation category.  We were one of the four finalists, alongside Royal Mail, Stanley and eventual winners, BT Business, in what was one of the most strongly contended categories this year.
