Some users are having problems with the new disks issued in February

HMRC has published a note on its website drawing attention to some problems and errors which may affect users of the employer CD-ROM 2010 disks issued in February.

You may experience a problem running the Diagnostic Tool installed with the Employer CD-ROM. There is an issue with the Employer CD-ROM 2010 and Norton Internet Security/Norton 360 which affects in particular users of Windows XP and Vista.
There is an error in the P11 calculator on the 2009 disk. The error occurs where previous pay and tax has been entered on the P11 calculator. An error message will appear when you open the CD-ROM 2010 after you have installed it in some circumstances.

I wasted a morning trying to install this on a new laptop with Windows Vista (not Norton AV). After disabling the firewall and trying various configurations I gave up. I realise I shouldn't have even started using it but thought I would try it out advance of inevitable client queries. I even thought it might be the office server so I tried it home with a BT Home Hub and got the same results.You do wonder how much money has been spent on this and if it is really cost effective. Surely it would be better to do a deal with an established software vendor. I had similar problems with the 2009 CD as well. For a so called advanced economy it isn't very impressive.

I am thoroughly fed up with the incompetance shown by HMC&E in regard to the issue of these disks. The 2008 Edition seemed fine. The enhanced 2009 Edition had problems which after a fashion were fixed so it could be used. Now it appears the 2010 Edition is also beset with problems. Doesn't somebody at HMC&E outside of the IT department thoroughly test, and test again before release. Apparently not. It is such a basic matter. How many of the disks are issued. Millions. It is an absolute disgrace.

I have wasted so much time with the new 2010 HMRC CD-ROM, I have had to ask an IT expert to have a look! I have been using these CD ROMS for years with very little trouble but this years is an absolute pain! I even took it home because I thought it might be the PC, but I have the same problem. They want you to do everything online with this CD-ROM but don't give you something that is workable. I even telephoned the help desk, was instructed to do all sorts, it still wouldn't work!!

Having got ahead of myself and even loaded the disk without any problem (Firefox being friendly) I then started on the year end. Then the problems started and I could not understand where the figures cam eform. Having not seen anything relating to a potential problem I wasted some time on this. At last I found an update on the HMRC site but not obvious. It tells you that the total amount of tax and National Insurance contributions due is sometimes being carried forward incorrectly to the 2009-10 end-of-year summary (P35. So beware and make sure you find the update http://www.hmrc.gov.uk/employers/cdrom/download-update.htm before doing anything else.
