HMRC may be contacting people about a new, voluntary scheme
The government is introducing a new scheme that will enable people to pay back self assessment tax debts or tax credit overpayments by deduction from their DWP benefits.
This will be a voluntary scheme which HMRC and the Department for Work and Pensions (DWP) are working on together.
As part of this project, HMRC will be contacting a number of taxpayer and claimants to invite them to take part. The contact from HMRC will be by letter. People will not be contacted by telephone to take part in the scheme. The scheme is entirely voluntary and people do not have to take part. Anyone who receives a letter will be asked to complete a form and return it to HMRC.
All enquiries regarding the scheme should be directed to HMRC on telephone number 0151 703 8075
