A cheaper service to help claimants
HMRC has changed the number for its Tax Credit Helpline. The new number is: 0345 300 3900.
For those with hearing or speech impairments there is a new textphone number: 0345 300 3909.
HMRC says that the old numbers, which have an 0845 code, will still work for 18 months.
The reason for the change is that 0345 numbers are less expensive than 0845 numbers for the majority of callers, especially those using mobile phones. Callers to the Helpline will only pay the same amount as a landline call to a 01 or 02 number and the price is the same for calls from mobiles. 0345 numbers are generally included in any discount schemes or inclusive call minutes that claimants may already have with landline or mobile phone operators.
This change follows an Ofcom report In December 2010 which encouraged the use of 0345 numbers over their 0845 counterparts, and campaigning by bodies such as the Low Incomes Tax Reform Group.
