Important updates and changes to Basic PAYE Tools

Get the update to finalise year end payroll


Basic PAYE Tools is the free HMRC software package provided to help employers with up to 50 employees run their payrolls throughout the year.


Employers with up to and including nine employees at 5 April, can use it to file the Employer Annual Return (forms P35 and P14) online. They can also use it to file starter and leaver forms (P45 and P46) online.


The latest version,, is needed to finalise the 2011/12 year and start the payroll for 2012/13. It also provides a few small fixes and the following improvements:

  • The P60 printing issues with Adobe have been resolved.
  • There is a direct link from the Employee Details tab to change employees’ tax codes.
  • It has an interactive check list for all the information required to complete the Employer Annual Return.
  • There is a minor correction to the end of year check for Class 1 National Insurance Contributions.

Existing users who have not yet downloaded the July 2011 update (version, must do this before downloading the March 2012 update (version, to make sure they transfer their employee data across to the latest version.
