HMRC publishes a limited extension of the self assessment deadline

But it's not for everyone

HMRC has published an announcement that the self assessment filing deadline has not been extended, only for the announcement to then allow for an extension for a limited group of taxpayers who had started but had not been able to finish the filing by the deadline.

The announcement is at https://www.gov.uk/government/news/self-assessment-deadline

The basic deadlines are unchanged. Tax returns and any tax due must be received by HMRC by midnight tonight, 31 January. However, if someone has registered for the Online Service, or existing customers have lost their User ID or password and realise they have left it too late, HMRC will allow some extra time for this information to be received. This only applies to taxpayers who did the following between midnight on 21 January and midnight on 31 January 2014:

  • enrolled for the Self Assessment online service, or
  • requested a replacement user ID or password

The announcement does not actually say when taxpayers must file the information. We understand it is by close of play 15 February. The due date of payment for tax will remain 31 January 2014.
