Chop Chop

Some very basic IT management cost cutting tips were listed by Computer Weekly's reporting of a Gartner symposium on how IT should be responding to the credit crunch.  But I was quite surprised - indeed shocked - though perhaps I shouldn't have been - that these weren't all already being addressed continually by IT Management!

I mean - some of the short-term steps listed were to rationalise apps and to "audit the invoices you pay you may be paying maintenance for software you no longer use ..."?!?!?  Doesn't everyone do that as a matter of fact.

Medium term tips concentrated on steps such as virtualisation and to stop aiming for perfection and in the longer term adopt a modular architecture.  Surely these have been practiced for decades and reflect common sense whatever the economic climate.

However after thinking about it longer I realise that everyone needs a regular shakeup - its very easy to become complacent about what's you're doing in an IT shop - what was bleeding edge 3 years ago is already old hat - yet legacy systems and ways of working are embedded.  Just one example - whole life licensing scenarios have radically changed with open source and the flexibility of cloud computing and SAAS.

The key is to provide a competitive edge and add value whilst managing costs.
