Whether foolishly or otherwise, a post on AccountingWeb spurred me into doing something I should have started a long time ago: develop a database of accounting related SaaS applications and services.
At the moment it is a bit of a Heinz 57 of stuff I culled from a comment by Alan Wright of Liberty Accounts and other things I found along the way. It will change over time and some things may be hived off elsewhere. But it's a start.
In addition, I have started to develop a wiki based on the database where the idea is to offer additional more rich information beyond the basics set out in the database. The wiki will also serve as a repository for case material, commentary on vendor offerings and thoughts around issues specific to the accounting market. In doing so, I am hoping to start closing the gap between the FUD around SaaS and the reality while providing a resource that potential buyers can consult.
If you are interested in this project, have stories you'd like to share or know about services that I've missed then please let me know. You can embed the database on any website that allows its inclusion (IT Counts doesn't.) Instead, I have shown an image at the top of this post to give an idea of its structure. You could for example, make it available as an internal resource on an intranet. You don't need to do anything because it updates automatically as changes are made. If that is of interest then send me a message and I'll provide the embed code.
