The Two Minute Rule

It seems my earlier post about touch typing sparked off a fair bit of discussion about time-saving tips including an excellent post from Simon that has generated some useful comments.

I'm going to weigh in with one more generalist, non techy tip that I find useful across the board - both at work and at leisure. The Two Minute Rule.

It is really simple. If a task pops up and it will take less than two minutes to get it done, do it now. If it will take longer, feel free to put it into whatever 'pending' systems you manage.

It is not my rule. It 'belongs to' David Allen, a time management guru. You may be aware of his Getting Things Done system, the book of the same name, and his follow-up title Making It All Work.

I've read Getting Things Done and taken some ideas from it which I've customised and use with varying degrees of success. If you think you need more discipline in your working or home life, it would be a good place to start looking for ideas.

The Two Minute Rule is the only one of Allen's I employ religiously. It works.

Next time, swallowing your frog.
