I met with a number of accounting practices early in July to see what use they make of technology. All are active users of different aspects of technology, but all seeking to leverage business benefit from its use. One uses document management software and has all but eliminated paper; one uses a cloud accounting system for its clients and would never go back to an on-premise system; and one is in the vanguard of electronic filings, having made the first electronic filing way back in 1997.
They kindly shared their technology tips with me so that I could share these with members of the faculty. The full write up is in this month’s Chartech magazine, but here are some edited highlights. Top tips include:
- Use multiple screens
- Implement a fully tested disaster recovery plan. Evaluate backing up to the cloud
- Consider a document management system to improve processes and reduce cost
- Consider mobile internet devices to keep connected
- Virtual private networks are good for branch offices and home working
- Webinars are a cheap and effective marketing tool.
These are explained in fuller detail in the magazine, together with more on cloud, eliminating rekeying, marketing to clients and comfy chairs! (Interested non-faculty members can join here.)
Final tip from me is Google Streetview. The night before each trip I checked out the office I was due to visit. The results were impressive, extended the use of my satnav – and were free!
What is your top technology tip for your fellow practices?
