Confidentiality and IT - a guide for business managers

The faculty has recently published a technical publication on Confidentiality and IT as part of its legal series of publications. This has been written by Rachel Burnett, a qualified lawyer and previous President of the BCS.

Confidentiality is an increasingly important topic in business and especially in the area of IT. This guide discusses the law relating to confidential information and IT and provides advice on how to protect confidential information effectively under English law. A sample of the guide is available here.

After a review how confidential information may be protected at law, the guide then deals with the following issues:

  • Non-disclosure agreements
  • Employment relationships
  • Proprietary rights
  • Personal data
  • Freedom of information
  • Privary and the media

As with all publications from the faculty, this is aimed at a business rather than a specialist reader.  It can be read cover to cover for an detailed review of the law, or it can be dipped into if you have interests in particular areas. If nothing else, the section on Privacy and the media is an entertaining read and gives advice on how and how not to blog anonymously.

The publication ends with a checklist for business managers to help them implement the recommendations outlined in the guide.

The publication is free to faculty members here or is available from the ICAEW shop here.
